Kazakhstan’s SCAT to open new MRO center in Shymkent in 2027
It marks the Central Asian nation's first maintenance facility for American-made aircraft
The Kazakhstan-based airline SCAT Airlines has commenced construction of a new MRO hangar facility at its home base in Shymkent. Scheduled to become operational in late 2027, the center will focus on a full cycle of technical maintenance for Boeing aircraft, including the Boeing 737 (Classic/NG/MAX), Boeing 757/767 families, and widebody Boeing 777s.
The project is being implemented by SCAT in partnership with Boeing and will mark the first maintenance center for the U.S.-made aircraft in Kazakhstan. Situated on a 10-hectare site, the engineering and technical infrastructure will span over 45,000 square meters, including an aircraft apron exceeding 6 hectares. The new facility will serve not only the parent airline’s fleet but also third-party customers.
Currently, SCAT’s fleet includes 26 narrowbody Boeing 737 aircraft, including 12 latest-generation MAX airliners. The carrier plans to receive two more MAX aircraft this year, with an additional nine scheduled for delivery in 2027–2028. Furthermore, the airline operates four Boeing 757-200s and one Boeing 767-300 for leisure charters under the Sunday Airlines brand.
SCAT President Vladimir Denisov previously stated that starting in 2030, the airline plans to purchase widebody aircraft such as the Boeing 777 and 787.
Currently, Uzbekistan Airways Technics is the only facility in Central Asia providing maintenance for Boeing 737/747/757/767/787 aircraft. Kazakhstan’s national carrier, Air Astana, also plans to develop base maintenance capabilities for the Boeing 787 as it takes delivery of the type later this year.
